Michael Cavlan, announced candidate for the US Senate seat now held by Mark Dayton, is a seven year resident of the Twin Cities area. As a member of the Second congressional Green Party, he is seeking Green Party endorsement.
Michael CavlanHe is presently living in Apple Valley with his partner, Nancy Coons, an Ojibway tribe member. He has two sons Sean, age 15 and Phelim James, age 22.
Born in the United States in 1959, his formative years were spent in Northern Ireland living with his Catholic Family.
Cavlan is a Registered Nurse specializing in burns, trauma and intensive care and is employed in the Burn Unit at Regional Hospital in St. Paul. Immediately after 9/11 he volunteered and went to the Washington, DC Hospital burn unit to work with victims of the Pentagon attack.
He is currently a member of the National Disaster Medical Systems, an arm of the Federal Emergency Management Administration (FEMA) and a member of the Minnesota Nurses Association.
A longtime media critic, Cavlan is an advocate for journalists of integrity and stands in opposition to the corporate media consolidation, which he considers “one of the largest threats to our freedom” and went to Ohio as an official in the recount effort there after the 2004 Presidential elections.
He is a longtime peace activist and supports the immediate withdrawal of our troops from Iraq and Afghanistan and the stopping of all the construction of permanent bases taking place there at present.
Because he has faith in the advantages of preventive health care, Cavlan is a supporter of the passage of a bill for Universal Single Pager Heath Care Plan for the entire nation.
